Dear Parents/Guardians,

 

Welcome back to school! My name is Mrs. Fox and I am your child’s English

and/or AIS teacher for the 2022-2023 school year. I am so excited to be able to work with you this year. We will be writing, reading, and researching. Our first unit for English will be “Building and Communicating Knowledge through Research”. AIS (academic intervention services) will be an opportunity to focus on students’ individual needs. Below is some important information:

 

Grading Policy:

50% tests

40% classwork

10% homework

 

Supplies needed for my class:

Pencils or pens

Folder

Post-its

2 One subject notebooks (One for ELA and one for AIS)

*Students should also have an independent reading book to read at home if possible*

This Week in ELA

This week we are practicing using evidence from the text to support our responses.  We are working with a variety of texts and will begin Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds after winter break.

Term 2

Welcome to English 2!  We are starting a new unit this week: Working with Evidence and Making Claims
 
Today we will be taking a pre-assessment to assess how much we already know.
 
If you were not here last week you need to complete MAP testing when you return.

This week our class is learning Notice & Note strategies for close reading.  These strategies will be referenced when we start our new novel The Five People You Meet in Heaven.

This week we started drafting and revising/editing our research essays based on Temple Grandin on her findings.

11/01- If Temple Grandin didn't research animals, what do you think would have happened to her? Why?
11/02- Election Day - Online Assignment
11/03-study for vocabulary quiz
11/04- What is an appositive? How do appositives contribute to the quality of writing?
11/05- Explain how using transition words or phrases improves the quality of writing.  What are some of the phrases we can use in a research essay?

We have started watching the film "Temple Grandin" and are comparing and contrasting it to what we learned about her through our research.
 
HW- 
10/25- Summarize any informational article, including the key details and central idea
10/26- Summarize any informational article, including the key details and central idea
10/27- Writing Prompt: Why do you think animals have adapted to be hypersensitive to details and humans did not? Minimum of 5 sentences in your response.
10/28- Writing Prompt- How does Temple Grandin react to uncomfortable situations? How has she coped with her reactions? Minimum of 5 sentences in your response.
10/29- Writing Prompt- How has Temple Grandin improved life for cattle? Give at least two examples.  What obstacles did she face trying to accomplish this?

This week in ELA

We have watched several video clips and analyzed Temple Grandin's perspective on what it feels like to be autistic, sensory issues, and how animals make us human.
 
We also took a vocabulary quiz.
 
HW is to practice our text analysis skills by reading informational articles and summarizing the key ideas.  The article is the choice of the student.

This week in ELA

We have started our research unit on Autism & will be focusing on Temple Grandin and her contributions to the Autistic community.
